Australian Haemovigilance Report

The National Blood Authority (NBA) has released its second Australian Haemovigilance Report. The 2010 Report conveys details on the nature and extent of transfusion errors and reactions that occurred in Australian hospitals from July 2008 to June 2009.

The report includes validated data from jurisdictional haemovigilance programs; BloodSafe in South Australia, the Queensland Incidents in Transfusion program and the Victorian Blood Matters - Better Safer Transfusion Program and Serious Transfusion Incident Reporting (STIR) program. STIR also supports haemovigilance in Tasmania, the ACT and Northern Territory.

The report notes that transfusion risks generally fall into two main categories:
• Procedural errors such as patient misidentification and blood sampling errors, and transfusing the wrong patient, and
• Reactions such as acute transfusion reactions (for example fever and chills) and bacterial infections.

Soft copies of the report can be downloaded from the NBA website, or you can request hard copies http://www.nba.gov.au/haemovigilance/report.html

National Blood Donor Week

National Blood Donor Week ran from 18 – 24 July.

A media campaign ensured stories of dedicated donors and recipients appeared in regional and metro newspapers and on radio programs across the country. Celebrity chef Curtis Stone supported the campaign by visiting a donor centre and talking about the Blood Service on Channel 7’s Sunrise and Channel 9’s Mornings with Kerri-Anne.

More than 1,900 donors were recognised for milestone donations at National Blood Donor Week functions around the country.

The statistics show that media attention throughout the week inspired the community to donate blood. A total of 1,472 people registered to donate through the donateblood website, a 26 per cent increase from last year’s National Blood Donor Week and almost double average weekly registrations. There was a six per cent increase in calls to the Blood Service’s National Contact Centre from the previous week and almost 14,000 appointments were booked, a 10 per cent increase on the week before.

Australian companies got behind National Blood Donor Week by changing email signatures, uploading web banners on their internal websites and organising group blood donations.

Blood Component Supply 2009/10

In 2009/10, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service supplied 795,892 red cells, 128,495 platelets, 160,813 units of clinical fresh frozen plasma, 64,734 units of cryoprecipitate and 11,872 units of cryodepleted plasma, representing an increase of 0.3%, 8.7%, 5.3%, 9.2% and -23.1% respectively compared with 2008/09.

Additionally, the Blood Service delivered over 452 tonne of plasma to CSL Biotherapies for fractionation into plasma derivatives, such as Intragam P, hyperimmune globulins, Albumex and coagulation factor concentrates. This was 15.8% higher than the supply in 2008/09 (371 tonne).
